Choosing a Contractor

Handy Tips for choosing your contractor

Check the License

Contractors must be licensed in Virginia and hold a valid and current license from the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Ask any prospective contractor to see the contractor's license and another form of photo identification.

The name on the license must be the same as the contractor (or the at least the name of the business). To find out if an technician is licensed in Virginia, call the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (804) 367-2945 or go to www.state.va.us/dpor.

It is illegal for a contractor to use another contractor's license, if the contractor can't or won't produce their license, find another professional to ensure quality service or repairs.

Check References

Ask the the contractor for references. Call and see if they were satisfied with their work. A reputable company will be proud to list their references. Ask the customer about the technicians work habits, costs, and the level of cooperation. Find out if the contractor had adheared the work schedule and honored the terms of the contract.

Does the HVAC Contractor have Insurance?

Virginia law requires workers compensation insurance coverage for licensed contractors. Ask the contractor if his company is insured against property damage, and personal liability in case of accidents. Ask for the name of your contractor's insurance carrier and agency to verify that the contractor has insurance.

Get Competitive Bids

Don't automatically accept the contractor with the lowest price. Make sure all bids are based on the same set of service and equipment specifications. Discuss in detail and make sure you understand the reasons for variations in price. A higher price may be your lowest overall cost if the materials used are of higher quality or the work is more complete.

Beware of a bid that is drastically lower than others. It may indicate the contractor is not including all of the work (and/or material) or has made a mistate. You are sure to have a problem if you accept a low bid based on an error or misunderstanding.
